Boy do I feel stupid. This couple comes to my door and starts talking about how much it helps to practice public speaking by going door-to-door and interacting with perfect strangers, rather than sitting at home doing nothing. At first I thought they were JW's, but they weren't dressed nice at all (the guy looked like a thug, but was so very nice). Anyway, before I knew it, I was picking out magazines that I had interest in and by purchasing a subscription, I would be helping them fulfill their dreams of traveling abroad. Since I study foreign languages, I sympathized. Unfortunately, I'm not the type of person to slam the door in anyone's face; I like to let others state their case. He said for each subscription, they would get X amount of points, the trip being their prize for the most points. Long story short (too late) I'm handing over a check for a magazine subscription and they're on their marry way. I had this gut feeling it was a scam from the beginning, so I did research on the company. BINGO! Even Google's auto-search came up with "scam." I'm mailing the cancellation notice tomorrow and my bank will be blocking this transaction. For everyone, take this pearl of wisdom: BY YOUR MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONS AT THE SUPERMARKET CHECKOUT LANE LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!!!!!!!! It will save you a lot of trouble (and self-loathing).
