I am the latest victim of the Airbnb scam. A property is listed, contact is made through the Airbnb website confirming availability and advising that the host needs additional information. Host asks that you contact them on direct mail as they read that more often and since it is not made clear in red on the front lage of the site and on the booking enquiry form (despite this scam operating since August 2012), you oblige, make payment and loose you money and your accomodation. Airbnb's response: "sorry about your loss but it is not our fault and we do not take respinsibility". I would agree with their comment if I felt that they took sufficient responsibility to inform and warn their users of this particular danger since they are well aware of it. Certainly the consumer protection laws in the US places some obligation on the supplier to provide the user with appropriate information and warnings about matter such as these which they had good and timeous knowledge about..... Good avenue to investigate.
