I purchased a new computer yesterday at 4 pm. At 8 pm I was installing Microsoft office program when a message popped up stating that my computer was compromised and I could not install this program. I called the number, at first thinking that I was calling Microsoft customer service. I had in fact contacted VSUPPORT llc in Gardena California and spoke with Mohammad Mohsin. He said that I had a NETWORK virius and that there was nothing I could do about it. I said I would take the computer back and complain to Best Buy, but he insisted that even a new computer would do the same thing. He said he had a fix for this problem and it would cost $199.95 but I would not be charged unless I was completely satisfied. I reluctantly allowed his company remote access to my computer and after 2 hours of mucking around in my computer another technician worked on the computer installing free registry cleaners and the like. I was told that I would have installed by them, a lifetime subscription of software that would prevent these registry errors and trojans. I noted today that those things installed were free programs that anyone can download and use with no tech help needed. I also noted him going into personal files where passwords were stored and my e-mail accounts.
Today I called Acer and told them what happened. They said it was impossible that this new computer was already infected and I should have called them first. Of course, hindsight is 20/20. I called my credit card company and they will be disputing the charge for me.
