My son was contacted repeatedly by Reading America LLC. They were trying to persuade him to enter into 6 magazine subscriptions for a total cost of $450.00. As an incentive, he was told that he would receive a $500.00 gift card to an online shopping mall and he could also cancel the agreement within a week if he changed his mind. At the time, my son was recovering from a severe head injury and his mentation was quite confused. While he did not capitulate during the first several calls, they called one day when he was suffering from a severe headache and he agreed to the subscriptions just to get them off the phone. When he called the next day to cancel the agreement, they told him that wasn't possible. They took payments out of his bank account for four months after which there was no more money in the account. Following multiple intimidating and threatening phone calls, my son finally told me of the problem. I have now spoken with a variety of Reading America's representatives, all of whom have been quite rude and who have attempted to intimidate me. I have explained that the head injury and the resultant confused mentation rendered him incompetent to legally enter into the agreement. They demanded documentation from the physician to support my assertion, and that was sent to them. They still refuse to release him from the agreement and are now sending letters threatening "further action". In addition, I have asked repeatedly that Reading America send me a copy of the terms of the agreement but they flatly refuse to do so. My son has not received any magazines or the gift card.
