I had lost my cell phone and need to use a payphone to retrieve it. I first call my parents, then my girlfriend. Since they live outside my area, I was asked to put more money in the phone (more than the initial 50 cent) so I place my credit card in the slot. I had a first 3-4 minutes call (cost me 22,97$ CAD) and second call was about 2 minutes long (cost me 11,69$ CAD). I haven't speak to an operator, and haven't been warned about the pricing... I think it's way overcharged! I wasn't calling oversea, I was calling cities about 100 km away from mine... it would had cost less to full my car and drive by my prents and girlfriend!

    Most consumers do not understand and appreciate the expense differences between a direct-dialed call and an operator assisted call; operator assisted calls are more expensive due to the numerous expenses associated with them, such as:

    Validation
    Billing & Collection
    Bad debt
    Live operator staffing (amortized over all calls)
    Credit card processing fees and compliance requirements
    Customer service center

    None of these expenses are associated with coin-paid direct-dial calls placed from a pay telephone or direct-dialed calls placed from a residence or business.

    WiMacTel does not post our calling rates on pay telephones due to space limitations. With calls to locations worldwide; automated versus live operator processing; and, various billing methods, there is no room to display all of the resulting rates. To help consumers make an informed decision, WiMacTel does make available the option to obtain a rate quote.
