Someone pretending to be from her bank called my 92 year old mother (on a weekend) and tricked her into giving out her bank account number and private information. They told her someone was trying to debit $394 from her bank account and if she had not authorized it, she needed to verify her account information so they could stop it from happening. Then they debited her account for $394.00. Her bank statement showed that IREED had debited her account.

  • This kind of scam is so cruel. Unfortunately, this happens every day. These nasty folks target older people because they tend to be less "savvy" about current scams, and they tend to be far too trusting. No matter what the person's age, no one should ever give out information to anyone over the phone, or online in a chat, no matter who they claim to be (my facebook was hacked and someone claiming to be me asked all my fb friends for money saying I was stranded in London!). The bank may be able to trace the person, and if they can't, I would put a fraud allert out for her social security number, and any ID that can be used for identity theft, as they may try to steal her identity as well. If you are not on her bank account, do go through the steps to have the bank change her account number ASAP so they can't do more damage.

I feel for you, as my 97 year old father was receiving monthly books that he thought were free because he didn't realize that he had agreed to a book club subscription over the phone.

Good luck at stoping any further damage.
