Approximate date and dollar amount. I signed up for Archives.com, paid my membership fee. During the course of doing some research I ordered some records - including an accidental erroneous one for around $30 (sorry, don't have access to precise detail as I'm currently blocked from using their site). I immediately emailed them, explained I'd made a mistake and expected not to be charged for that PARTICULAR order. They responded with a canned email which didn't even address my issue. I emailed back that someone really should have READ my email and requested a SUPERVISOR review it and refund me that PARTICULAR charge and if they didn't there would be consequences. I tried to get back in to my account, was unable to do so and emailed them again. I received a response saying they'd blocked my access and something about my threatening them with a chargeback was not a good business practice. I emailed them this evening and said their shutting me out of the account which I'd paid for (without any notification or allowing me the ability to state my side of the story) was poor business practice. I'd actually like to be able to continue with my Archives membership as some of the info I found was useful. Fortunately, I have certain RIGHTS as I paid for my membership using my CREDIT CARD so if they decide to play hardball and not grant me access to the account, I will go to my CREDIT CARD COMPANY and CONTEST it. The ball is in Archives court at this moment. In the meantime, I found an EXCELLENT website through the LDS church which is absolutely free (www.familysearch.org) and no pressure to join or convert - one doesn't even need to be logged in to use their site.

  • I would like to say THANK YOU to Chelsea at Archives.com for setting things straight with my Archives.com account. Chelsea, you did the right thing here and I appreciate it very much. I will say there needs to be a change made so consumers can REVIEW their purchases first before making them. I believe this will save both Archives and the consumer a lot of grief. I'm not a newbie and have used the internet for many years - but still the occasional mistake gets made and a person should have the ability to review prior to ordering. Many places do this - e.g., Amazon - and it just makes sense. Also, I would like to remind people that when they use their credit cards to pay for a service, they do have certain RIGHTS and one of those rights is to appeal. Anyway, THANK YOU Archives for doing the right thing by me, forgiving the particular charge and reinstating the account. I would also remind you it is "good business practice" to communicate with members PRIOR to closing them out of any account so they have a chance to be heard.
