A young man and woman came to my door today, talking about a contest selling magazines or donating books to a children's hospital to earn points for a trip to Italy and study abroad. The young man said he wanted to be a chef. They were relatively friendly. The choice of magazines proposed to be sent to a battered women shelter didn't seem quite right as they appeared to be mostly car or muscle magazines. Upon seeing my hesitation, they mentioned the alternative of donating educational books to a children's hospital. I suppose I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, so I said ok.

They asked if they could enter my home to write out the receipt; I refused, explaining that my home was a mess at the time and would write the receipt myself. I paid $59 in cash, and sent them on their way.

Having a slightly bad feeling about what happened, I checked their website explorercomm.com and sent them an e-mail just to confirm the donation. The website was rather lacking in information, and upon their listing on scambook, it appears that I fell for the scam. I do not expect a response now.

I do not hold what happened against those kids, but I hope that they do find their way.
