This is a retrospective review and account of what happened. I wanted to change my address so I searched for USPS change of address in google and the first website that came up was ChangeMyAddress.com; not the official USPS website. It looked similar to the USPS website (but users note that the website has no USPS logo, hence not the official USPS website). I was under the impression that I would be charged $1 for the change of address as USPS charges this amount. I looked at my credit card bill and saw a transaction of 19.95 on my account. I received no confirmation email for the transaction from ChangeMyAddress.com for a charge of $19.95. The only email that I received was from USPS stating that $1 had been charged. I called the credit card company for the dispute. While on the line with the dispute representative, we tried the number listed for this website which was invalid. I wanted to explore as to how this happened. Here is the way in which this website fools you and how they make it legal. On the first page, there is a statement "I agree to the Authorization appearing when I click this link, which authorizes this service to file on my behalf an official U.S. mail forwarding change of address form to forward my mail from the OLD Address to my NEW Address listed on this form". The first page also has continue or cancel on the page once you enter your information which states you can cancel and go to the USPS website. You do not see the cancel button if you do not scroll down. The site keeps changing so I am giving information as I look at the website now. The next page is a confirmation page for the change of address. If you are like everyone else, you will skip the statement that is on top because it is hidden from view. The statement is " You're almost finished!
US Postal Forwarding Notification: To prevent fraudulent address changes and to cover the cost of processing and handling, you authorize us to charge your credit or debit card a one-time $19.95 fee." So in the end, you will be charged this amount and will not be able to do anything about it. Hope this helps.
