They misrepresented themselves as Apple Support. I googled Apple Care support and their number came up on top - I assumed it was the Apple Support number. I started the conversation by explaining that I have Apple Care Support plan, the representative said that he could see my account and that I had support. I explained that I had called multiple times about my problem (I don't get good wireless connection, it is always dropping the signal). I explained what the last Apple support technician tried and that I wanted to pick up where we left off and try clearing out some cache's etc. The "representative" then explained that he was sure it was a virus problem, that he was very familiar with this type of problem and that they specialize in fixing this problem. He explained there were two options, one for 99.99 and one for 249.99. He tried really hard to convince me of the 249.99 but I went for the 99.99 I thought, well, if Apple is saying this is what I need to do to fix my problem, I will trust them and do it. I was then transfered to a "technician" who remotely accessed my computer to run the "optimization". I could see everything he was doing on my computer. He installed CCleaner and ran the program. This is a free computer optimization program that I was already familiar with. This is where I first became suspicious, I thought it very odd that Apple would simply install a free program and run it - especially since my problem has to do with connecting wirelessly. They weren't accessing any of the Network options or System Preferences, like the last Apple technician (the real ones) did. So I started to ask a lot of questions, like what exactly I was paying for. He said that after CCleaner was done running, he would restart my computer, run it again, and do all the other optimization stuff, and he would explain it all to me and answer my questions. Well, guess what, after the restart he was nowhere to be found, no more chat connection. And no phone number on the website to call. I ended up tracking them down in my phone call log a few days later after thinking more about it, and that's when I discovered it wasn't Apple support at all. I actually still thought that I had originally talked with Apple and they had transferred me to a third party technician that ran the CCleaner, and that the third party had ripped me off. Now I discovered that it was all done within one company the whole time, MyTechHelp, and they had misrepresented themselves as Apple.

In the end, here is my advice if you are in this position. I called my credit card company and filed a complaint, and they blocked the charge, and blocked any future charges. BUT, I am still very concerned because this company has my information now, and they were able to remotely access my computer! I don't know what to do about that. I will be calling the real Apple to ask them how I can protect my computer from this company.

  • I have contacted numerous news stations, the federal bureau of investigation, the better business bureau, and the federal trade commission. I promise you these people will be stopped. The same exact thing happened to me yesterday and Saturday.
