  • As you well suspect, this is a scam. They may continue to threaten you with ruining your credit rating or taking you to court. It is part of their scam and it will not happen.

In this case, a bill was sent to your business with the claim that a verbal agreement was given for an on-line listing. When you call back, there is a recorded conversation in which a person from your business presumably has given permission to proceed with a for-cost listing, when in fact, it is just a spliced tape in which sentences from a phone conversation are taken out of context.

The Local Search Association which represents many legitimate Yellow Pages publishers recommends that you view its Bogus Billing website at http://www.localsearchassociation.org/Main/BogusBilling.aspx.

You should also share your story with your state attorney general, the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau. If you receive something via postal mail, you should send it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

For any questions, please e-mail the Local Search Association at [email protected].

Again, you are not to be faulted for the action of this scam. Neither you nor you employer are liable for any of these bogus bills.
