Below is a copy of several e-mails that was sent to Best Buy. No response.

This July,I brought in my Dell Computer to have some additional memory added. I was told by the Sales person that my computer was too old to have additional memory added. I opted to purchase a new computer. I purchased the Compaq Presario Notebook. The sales persons told me that the new computer would be faster and would give me the amount of memory I needed. They kept my old computer, as well as the new one, in order to transfer my documents to the new computer. Those documents were word documents. Several weeks later, I discovered that my new computer did not contain the Word Program and none of my word documents were transferred as promised. When I picked up my computers, the sales person gaveme my Geek Squard information packet; congradulating me on my purchase. When I contacted them about the missing word program, the sales person told me that this program had to be purchased separately. He indicated that I could download it or purchase it for an additional $100.00.
At no time, did he ask me to bring my comptuer into the store to help me with the downloading.

I asked them to e-mail me regarding this problem. No one has contacted me.

My phone number is (Personal Information Removed)

  • First, for future reference, Microsoft Word or Office NEVER comes standard on any computer that you purchase at any retailer. It may have to be purchased extra, or it may be included in the cost of the computer, but it is never on there for free. I realize that at the time you didn't know this, and I agree that the Geek Squad should have told you before promising to transfer your documents. Also, are you SURE that your documents are nowhere on the computer? Even though you can't view them since you don't have Word, the Geek Squad should have still uploaded the documents to your documents folder. If they did not upload them at time, they should still be able to do so as long as they didn't wipe your old computer (and they shouldn't have done so without your permission). Your documents should still be on your old computer. Certainly, you didn't let them keep your old computer, did you?

That being said, you can go to this website to either download the Microsoft Office Suite or Microsoft Word by itself.

However, if you look on your new computer, their should be a Microsoft Office icon somewhere, or it should be listed under your programs tab and you can download it that way. Most new computers (at least ones from Best Buy) come with the icon already uploaded onto the computer so that you can purchase a digital copy.

Alternatively, there is a free program that mimics Microsoft Office, called Open Office. Here is the link to download it:
    http://www.openoffice.org/
You can convert any document made in open office to any Microsoft office format. You can also view and edit Microsoft Office documents in this program. Some of the features are arranged differently though, so if you are more comfortable with using Microsoft Office and don't think that you could learn a new program, I would just buy Microsoft Office.

Once you have either of these document programs downloaded, I would take both your old and new computer back to best buy and make sure that they transfer your documents.
