  • Hi ChaiKo, I work as a technician for VacuumSpot.com.au and I thought I would offer some help to you. Firstly I would like to check whether you are talking about a burning smell or whether you are talking about more of a stale mouldy laundry type smell. If you are talking about a burning electrical smell this will usually indicate the motor itself is failing and you may need to contact a proper repairer to get a quote on replacing the motor.
I actually expect you are describing a musty or mouldy smell however and this is at least cheaper to sort out. The first thing you need to do is actually smell in the end of the hose because if the smell is actually coming from the hose it is VERY difficult to get out without replacing. If it i in the hose you can wash the hose preferably with a high pressure cleaner but because of the corrugations in the hose you will need to make sure that the hose dries out 100% before using again or the moisture will trap more dirt and odor making the situation worse. If you have a electric hose for a powerhead or adjustable suction on the handle unfortunately you will need to replace the hose as you cannot wash for safety reasons.
Generally the most common place for smells to build up is in the vacuum cleaner filter particularly if the vacuum is a bagless variety. What generally happens is users wash their filter but don't allow the filter to dry to 100% and when the filter is put back in the vacuum it gets mouldy and develops a bad smell. If you have a smell of the filter and it is the reason for the smell you will need to replace the filter and give your machine a clean with a nice scented cleaning product like "vanilla Fridge wipe". There is also some specialised vacuum dedorisers available in a variety of scents that are good to use as well as cleaning the filter.
Anyway basically if it is the hose you can wash as long as it is not electric. If it is the filter you will probably need to get a new one. Hope this gives you a start
