The weather’s heating up, and you’re ready to take a load off after slaving over research papers and mid-terms. Whether it’s Cabo or Vegas, it’s time to escape with your friends and throw the peace sign to your parents. Scammers salivate at the thought of excited young people running around their neck of the woods with nothing but partying to do.
If one of these scammers gets a hold of your identity, the possibilities will be endless. Scammers can pose as family members, family friends and even government officials to squeeze cash out of your parents. Experts are calling these types of scams ‘family scams.’ For instance, they will encourage your parents to wire money to them while they pose as a government agency, warning that if the money isn’t wired immediately, who knows when you’ll be released. Playing on the emotions of parents who could lose their children? Sick, we know. That’s why we’re here to give you some pointers:
– Let the government know that you will be traveling abroad. In case of an emergency, there will be a way to locate you.
– For parents, require that your teenagers check-in at a certain time with you everyday.
– Complete all the details in your passport: sign it and fill out the emergency information page.
– Make sure friends and family have copies of your passport and itinerary.
– Familiarize yourself with the laws of wherever you’re visiting.
– Don’t leave your belongings unattended.
– Most importantly, have fun and be safe!
