They called me up, claiming to be from "Microsoft Technical Support", and that my PC was infected. I realised this was bogus immediately (I am a software engineer for 25 years), but I thought I would go along for the half hour ride....
They led me to the windows event logs (I am extremely familiar with this) and said there are lots of warnings there (this is completely normal behaviour) but they said those are the virus' on my PC.
I continually asked them if they were selling anything. They said "NO, they are from Microsoft".
I then asked them how they could identify my PC which is behind a firewall. They told me to run a cmd window and run the assoc (the old file association dos app), and they read back a CLSID which is apart of Windows (ie on all computers)
When I said this was on all computers, they said "Who knows more about computers, you or me?" I then said I was a software engineer.
They hung up about a millisecond later.
Microsoft should chase these guys down. They were from India.

Oh no,I got the same call this morning and fell for it. My computer has been acting slower lately, but the antivirus program hasn't come up with anything. He showed me the antivirus looked like it was already comprimized and didn't have my XP in the settings anymore.
WHAT DO I DO NOW? I did give them access to my machine against my gut feeling, but I was in a rush, just woke up and had a prior engangement I needed to go to right away.
CRAP, I'm so nervous!
