Hired Joe Shively, off Craigslist, to do some work on our home. He said he had 10 years in the industry and owns his own company. We asked if he was insured and he said yes. He was very knowledgeable and we agreed to pay cash. We had about 4 or 5 odd jobs for him to do. Joe suggested we pay half upfront and pay half when he's finished; we agreed that was best. After paying a little over half, Joe stopped doing work on the house. We contacted him a few times and he said he was scared we weren't going to pay him. He said we were 'picky' and picky people never pay him. He wanted the remainder of the money now before he would finish the work. We paid him, and then we never heard from him again. He ignored our calls and e-mails, and never answered the door when we went to his house (he lives across the street). Joe hid a huge pile of cement under our front deck, left a mound of insulation from the third floor walls hidden in our basement, left scuffs and scratches on our walls, stains and paint on our cream colored carpet, and a fine layer of dust in our entire home! What a nightmare. After posting a blog about him, we got a response from a lady who said the same thing happened to her. After she paid Joe, he disappeared and never finished the work. None of us were 'picky', that was just his line to scam us. He is dishonest, very messy and an amateur at best. Joe also stole our wood and trim supplies (that we bought separately).
He doesn't even own a truck, and every time we left the house his pregnant wife would sneak over (which we wouldn't have had a problem with if they asked us). They were just always being sneaky and uncommunicative. We bought them baby gifts and took them out to dinner, and then they scammed us hardcore. Joe also started a company called "Paradix Sportswear" - so buyer beware because you'll probably get scammed here as well. Joe Shively is trying to get into the medical field - which is very scary. He works part-time for Point Park University as the overnight Paramedic.
