I paid the shipping and handaling charges for the "Aftershock" book advertised and was then offered two pages of other offers. I clicked the "No Thanks" button and then received a confirmation for purchasing $300 worth of newsletters and trial memberships!
I reported this issue to the new Consumer Finance government agency, my credit union (the source of the debit card used) and Newsmax's customer service. Apparently there are actual websites devoted to this particular scam. Even worse, this isn't even the "legitimate" Aftershock book! The real Aftershock book was written by a University of California Professor (R. Reich). It turns out that this is just a ploy to "scare" and/or "scam" you into additional purchases to avoid an economic apoclyptic future.
