I received a call from someone with a very thick Indian accent named "Brad Smith," who informed me that he was following up on a "request" I made to cancel my service with the "Public Yellow Pages." I told him that I was not aware of ever signing up with the "Public Yellow Pages," but he insisted that I had an account with them and that if I didn't get a "cancellation number" right away, I would have to pay $599.00 for a new year of service. Then "Mr. Smith" transferred me to the "quality assurance division," where a gentleman named "David" told me that I would be sent an invoice for $599.00 for the previous 12 months' service. When I asked "David" to fax me information on the order I placed, he told me that he could not provide that information and would transfer me back to "Mr. Smith." Then the call was dropped. A few minutes later, "Mr. Smith" called back again, at which point I told him that I wanted information on the order I placed so that I could verify it. Just like another complaint logged onto Scambook, the more questions I asked, the more emphatic "Mr. Smith" became, and he told me that he didn't need to send me paperwork...all I needed to do was to answer "yes" to all the questions that the "quality assurance division" asked me, and then he would call back to obtain the "cancellation number" that I would get so that I would not have to pay the invoice. "Mr. Smith" then transferred me back to the "quality assurance division," and I answered OK to a bunch of questions (which I now regret, because they have me recorded now indicating that I am authorized to accept and pay an invoice for $599.00). I too was told that if I paid with a credit card right then, that I would receive a $100 discount. I chose to receive a paper invoice instead (which then puts all this in writing so that I can fight it). Then "Mr. Smith" called back and I gave him the cancellation number I received. I told "Mr. Smith" that I tried calling the number he used to call me, and that it came up as a dead number - the number is (919) 301-0759. He explained that he was using a "voice over internet" line, so he cannot receive call at that number. Now I'm waiting for a "cancellation notice" and an invoice for a service that I'm now sure I didn't order, but I went through this process because I wasn't completely sure at the time that I didn't order the service - I was given no time to stop and look through my files.

  • The exact same thing happened to me! Mispelled name and everything! When I finally got the bill in the mail, 4 months later, it said Past-Due. I called them to cancel the service they said it was too late. I had him replay the 3rd party recording for me and you can here me say " yes, (send me the cancelation invoice) so that I can refuse it". Even with that being recorded the guy didn't believe me and was yelling at me that I was a liar. My husband is an attorney so I put him on the line and the guy was yelling at him as well. We got a fax stating that if we didin't pay that it would go to their legal department. My husband told me not to worry about it, even without the recording they don't have a leg to stand on. The most they will do is send out a letter from their attorney's to try and scare us. Do Not pay these Bas**rds!
