Same pattern as the previous posters noted. I was invited to speak at a scientific conference in Feb 2016. EHS cold-called me today offering to book my hotel accommodations for the conference. The on-line form they had me fill out included asked for my credit card info and I gave it to them. They charged my credit card $345, which they said was 25% of the total hotel bill as a deposit (although online it had said $289 per night for four nights, but I thought maybe taxes and surcharges made up the difference). My credit card flagged the charge as suspicious. I contacted the conference organizers and found out they had nothing to do with this.
I'm lucky my credit card company was more on the ball than I was.
