I was enticed into participating in what turned out to be an illegal street race with no winners due to the main organizer Jim Durham disqualifying every participant so he could pocket all the entrance fees which was $1000.00 per person. The race was advertised as 10,000 miles and the route they gave riders to follow was actually 14,000 miles which made it difficult to reach the finish line within the deadline Durham set for qualifying finishers. Those 11 that were qualifying finishers ended up get disqualified by Durham. There were no winners. There were no cash prizes. Come to find out they pulled the same scam in 2010 and 2 people were killed and many were injured due to falling asleep on their bikes.

  • George,

The 2010 event was a winner take all event with a $500K cash prize which WAS paid to the top finisher.

In 2011, we intended to award $500K to the top 25 contenders. However, we only had 11 contenders make it to the finish line within the allotted time. The problem was that all of these riders were found to have run at speeds in excess of 20+ mph over the posted speed limits. As a participant in this year's event you would have received a Q&A when you came to Mesa for registration before the event kicked off. If you read the Q&A, you know that it specifically said that reckless riding (which included speeds of 20+ over posted speed limits) would be grounds for disqualification. ALL of the 2011 contenders acknowledged this and accepted their responsibility most graciously. They further acknowledged that, although the route was long and arduous, it was possible to complete it within the allotted time - without driving recklessly.

Because the 11 contenders travelled to Mesa for interviews and polygraph tests at their own expense; we agreed that a reimbursement for their trouble and expense was reasonable. Each contender was given the same amount.

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge is no different than any other start up business which generally requires a bit of a learning curve. Admittedly, we have had some learning and changing to do yet but, with 2 events under our belts, the 2012 event can only be bigger and better than ever. It was intended to be a Challenge in both 2010 and 2011 and in both years we told riders that we weren't planning to make it easy. We made no bones about it then and I make no apologies for it now.

Still, we do have the promise of a mini-series about the 2010 and 2011 events and a documentary which will help to fulfill our mission to create awareness about the plight of the Indian people living on reservations around America. As long as we are able to do that much, I will consider the event to be a success in spite of detractors and nay-sayers such as yourself.

    Sincerely meant, Beth

  • One more thing that you should understand, George.

Jim Red Cloud had very little to do with the planning and implementation of the 2011 event. We had an organizing committee which determined policy for this year's event and, just as in 2010, I acted in the capacity of the Director of Operations.

I don't understand the venom you are spewing against Jim but it is wrongly directed. If you have hate and discontent about the way this organization is run you would do better to take it to the source. If you have a contribution that you feel will improve the event, I would welcome you to bring it to me directly at [email protected].

    Thank you
