Out-of-towner trashes motorcycles with fire extinguisher

By Kelly McShane

BRACEBRIDGE - A 30-year-old St. Catherine’s man pleaded guilty to a slew of charges brought against him after leaving an area alcohol treatment centre to go on a bender.

“It’s always disappointing to hear when efforts are made to place you in treatment that you would leave,” said Justice J.D. Evans in Bracebridge court on Tuesday.

Still in custody on July 8, Frederick Bissonnette pleaded guilty to five counts, including two counts of mischief, after vandalizing two motorcycles in Huntsville last month.

According to Crown Attorney Doug Kasko, at the time of the incident Bissonnette had been attending residential addiction treatment at Pickerel Lake Recovery Centre, near the village of Burk’s Falls, as a condition set out by his surety when he entered into a recognizance in St. Catherine’s court in February.

Kasko said Bissonnette and a female patient of the centre left the facility on foot and hitchhiked to a bar on June 22 before he and the woman parted ways.

Around midnight, a guest at the King William Inn in Huntsville awoke to a loud bang before heading out to the parking lot to find two motorcycles and a car damaged and a suspicious man, later identified as Bissonnette, walking in the alley next to the building, court heard.

According to police, they were dispatched to the area where Bissonnette was found sleeping on the front porch of an apartment building on the same street as the inn where the vandalism took place.

Investigation revealed Bissonnette had taken a fire extinguisher off the wall and slammed the bottom of it against the ignition of a 2006 Harley Davidson, causing the extinguisher to activate spraying yellow powder all over the bike, court heard.

Kasko said Bissonnette then pulled ignition wiring out of a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle and proceeded to cut them before dropping the bike on its side, damaging an Acura MDX parked next to it in the process.

When police tracked Bissonnette down, it was evident he had been drinking alcohol despite being under a court order not to consume any alcoholic beverages, court heard.

According to Kasko, during his arrest Bissonnette identified himself using a fake name and date of birth, which police later discovered he had also used during a police traffic stop in 2012.

At the time of his July 8 pleas, Bissonnette had been in pretrial custody for 16 days, court heard.

Evans sentenced him to time served plus one month in custody on the first count of mischief under $5,000 and one month in custody to be served concurrently on the second, as well as one additional month to be served consecutively for providing a false name with the intent of evading the law, as well as an order to provide a sample of his DNA. He was sentenced to one month behind bars, to be served concurrently, on each of the two failure to comply charges. His custodial sentence will be followed by two years of probation, including the condition that he undergoes treatment for alcohol addiction.
