My bank account was levied today in the amount of $1100 by the State Franchise Tax Board in the state of California. When I contacted them to find out what the details were, they stated that I did not file taxes in 2005. I have never received any notification of any unfilled tax returns and when I asked them why this was the case, they said they tried to send a letter to my last known address, one that I have not lived at for 7 years. When asked how to rectify the situation, the representative said I needed to file taxes now and they would "see how much I actually owe". This tax year was almost 10 years ago and all the records have been destroyed. The representative could not give me any information about how to work around this, why they could not provide me with any legal documentation of the matter, or how to receive my funds back. I am very disappointed in the state tax system.
