I picked up a call at my home from my home landline at 1:20pm Oct 24, 2011. A men said he is from XXX company windows server department, i let him repeat twice and still did not understand which company. I asked that if he is from Microsoft, he said yes. He told me he found my computer has recently download many malicious files from internet and he want to check my computer resolve the problem. He directly me to this website (http://www.ammyy.com/en/) to click the green big button of "Start working with Ammyy Admin" to download his "diagnotic software". I did and installed on my laptop and then my antivirus software immediately report virus detected, trojan detected, ect. He said, "See, that's why i'm calling to help you out!" (Before this call, my laptop was running great without any virus report!) I was asked run the file c:\windows\ssl.exe which showed that my computer has malicious files. He said he could serve me for free before i renew the ssl.exe. He direct me to purchase several packages ranging from renew SSL.exe for 6 months (~$150) to lifetime (~$330) ect. Then i realized he is trying to sell me stuff. I refused and hung up. I called our university campus safety to report this issue, and they suggest me bring my laptop to ITS for checkup which will cost $25. I choose to do myself. It took me 3.5 days to scan virus using 4 different antivirus softwares, $165 to buy an external harddrive for a clean laptop backup before scanning, and finaly $132 to buy a replacement internal harddrive for my laoptop after accidentally dropped the harddrive during the operation. Then i know the SSL.exe is the virus detected by antivirus softwares. Now i'm fine and using the new internal harddrive. Just want to let everyone know that Ammyy Software development (http://www.ammyy.com/en/) is a scam webpage/company, never click on the green button to install anything from them!
