Company name is deceptive. I typed "Social Security Name Change" into Google and their website popped up saying it was the U.S. Social Security Administration. The page was listed as a secure page, so given that and the company name, I assumed I was dealing with the real U.S. SSA. I completed the form, entering my SSN and each of my parent's and payed the $39 fee. Govservices populated the official US form with my information, gave me a list of the documents I would need to send to prove my name change, and gave me the mailing address of my local SSA office. The confirmation page also told me I could do all of this for free and that Govservices is not affiliated with the US government at all, but simply removes the hassle of figuring out how to fill out a form yourself. Everything on the website looks very official and straightforward. I just applied for my marriage license in a very similar manner on the official government website and paid the fee; Govservices.us seemed no different, and given how the website displays on Google and the similarities to the real SSA page, I had no reason to think otherwise. I can dispute the charge on my credit card and regain the $39, but I'm now terrified that my identity and my parents' identities will be stolen by a deceptively named and marketed company.
