In June I received an email purporting to have come from the National Theatre in London to me as a Friend of the Theatre. The message said that I had won a prize. On following the link to claim my prize a statement appeared to the effect that the only prize still available was Veloura anti-ageing cream. To claim the prize it was necessary to pay a delivery charge of £3.49 which on June 18 I paid by credit card.

A jar of Veloura cream arrived which I gave to my wife telling her that it was my National Theatre Prize.

In August I received a credit card statement which showed that Veloura Veloura had been paid £74.95 on July 3 and £69.90 on August 2. I contacted my credit card company to query these charges. My credit card company agreed to look into the matter and get back to me. Later the same day a further jar of Veloura cream arrived by post with a despatch document stating "Veloura 1 Jar Monthly". At no time had I agreed to receive monthly jars of Veloura cream.

On googling Veloura I found a Scambook complaint that had been made by someone who had responded to a Veloura advertisement. The complainant had attempted without success to obtain a "Return Merchandise Authorization" from the Veloura Customer Care Department. His problems in dealing with that Department mirrored the same problems that I encountered when seeking to return the jar of Veloura cream which arrived out of the blue in August.

The National Theatre have confirmed to me that the email purporting to have come from them was entirely bogus.

My credit card company have confirmed to me that they will not authorise any further payments to Veloura .
