Edwin Herrmann trolled my email address from a legitimate freelance job website (guru.com) and contacted me privately about editing a document for him. I asked that we proceed with the contract through the job site and suggested that payment could be made through Paypal. He responded that he would send me a check for half of the contract amount and then send the remainder when the project was completed. I got nervous and found the original complaint here on this site, showing a similar M.O. I have ended all contact and negotiations with this person, but wanted to file the complaint to let editors everywhere know that this person/company is fraudulent! I will be reporting his activity and contact to guru.com as well, so that hopefully they can block his access to that site before he trolls and tries to scam anyone else.

  • I received the EXACT same query! Glad I Googled him to find out what others had experienced. I've spent too much time NOT getting paid the remaining 50% of projects so glad I don't have to deal with this guy.

  • Same story here! Thanks for notifying guru (that's where he must have found my information as well). Hopefully he gets caught before he scams anyone else.

  • I have cut off contact with this person as well. Same M.O. as everyone has noted. However, this person went by the name Dr. Albert Laws. I also found the document he wanted edited already published. I only found out this name as he messed up and sent me the wrong email. I knew this was a scam from the beginning, but just went with it for a bit. I have not lost anything. What has others lost? What should I be on the lookout for? Thanks.

  • I am so glad I did a little sleuthing and discovered you! I was just contacted today by "Dr. Albert Laws" who sought my editing services. He sent a request out of the blue for an editing job and wouldn't answer any of the questions I asked about what the article was for, how it was sourced, if I should edit in British or American English (it bounced back and forth). He was quite caught up in the details of how much I would charge and how much he would pay me, and that's when I really knew I was being scammed. No one is more concerned about how much to pay the editor than they are about the sanctity of their scholarly article. AND - then I found the article already published in a 2004 Valparaiso Law Review. Busted! I'm going to get on my various LinkedIn editing accounts and warn everyone. But I am annoyed that I have wasted valuable time dealing with this con artist. I have, at least, lost only a little time and didn't do any work or lose any money. It seems very odd that anyone would find freelance editors a good target for scamming ...
