I was told I would get 8 magazines for a little over $50 for a year, a gift card for gas, and a free coupon book. The company with whom I signed up for health insurance (United Golden Rule) transfered me to Central Rewards after I bought insurance, so I thought CR was legit. An Indian man whose accent was barely comprehensible made the offer and I accepted. I paid for the magazines and only received 2. A year and a half later, I received a call from collections saying that I owed Central Rewards $1,300 for a monthly magazine fee of over $50 for over a year. I was never told the fee would be a monthly fee when I signed up. The collections company told me I could settle for $500 immediately or they would "come after me" for $1,300. I was dumb enough to pay them. I have never been sent to collections and I thought this could seriously dammage my good credit. At the moment, paying seemed like the best way to get them off my back. Dumb, I know. Now I'm trying to dispute the charge and I can't because the charge has been transfered to the collection company, who is not at fault for the false charge. I can't get a hold of CR because nobody ever answers the phone. A dispute rep from Capital One called CR with me and when the Capital One rep introduced herself, the person from CR hung up. Nice.
