My son was sent a letter earlier in the year to come to a baseball factory try out. After the tryouts we were contacted and told that he had been selected to come to the underarmour world series in Pirate City. We had to respond within 48 hours. We were told that this was an underarmour event and that there would be college coaches and scouts all over the place. They talked about how many kids that they had gotten into college in different levels. They really made it sound like some big national event where the best of the best would be there. This was nothing more than a summer baseball camp that you might go to for five or six hundred dollars. This was basically rec players and was a total rip off. These guys should be shut down for false advertisement.

  • This response has been written in regards to the posting by Anonymous on August 8, 2011. Baseball Factory hosts the Baseball Factory World Series at Pirate City each summer in early August. The event is part of the Under Armour National Team series, which is operated by Baseball Factory. Based on the posting by Anonymous, it appears that their son was scouted by Baseball Factory at an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout and invited to attend this event. Players are selected based on their performance at the tryout and only certain players qualify based on ability.

In selecting a player for an event such at the Baseball Factory World Series at Pirate City, our organization is very careful to review the costs and benefits of the event with the player and family. We will never mislead a family or make false promises regarding an event. This event is a training event that incorporates tournament competition. Players train during the morning with our experienced staff of former professional players, former college coaches and professional scouts. Then in the afternoon, players are split up onto teams that compete in a tournament for the Baseball Factory World Series title. The goal of the event is to provide unmatched instruction during a baseball experience that will help prepare players for the college level. The overwhelming response from families was positive as players gained valuable coaching and competition against their peers.

At no point in time during the promotion process of this event was there mention of college coaches in attendance. This can be clearly seen from the event promotion page on our web site (http://baseballfactory.com/ourprograms/piratecity/). The benefits, which were delivered as promised, are clearly outlined for all families to review prior to accepting the invitation. Each family is also provided with a printed copy of this information in a flier so that they have another format for review.

We would also like to point out that the cost of the program includes all transportation for players except for their flight, all meals while attending the five day event, lodging during the event and an Under Armour jersey and hat. Baseball Factory rents the entire Pirate City facility and players have use of all MLB facilities including hotel rooms, meals, the MLB locker room, the MLB player lounge, etc. There is no extra cost to the players to use these facilities during the event.

Baseball Factory has been in business for 17 years and we have a system through which 98% of Division I programs, 70% of Division II and 60% of Division III have a Baseball Factory alum on their current roster. We have accomplished this by having strong integrity and a commitment to deliver what we promise, so we take all claims like this seriously, but in this case, what is written is simply not close to being an accurate description of the service provided. We would love to speak with Anonymous to resolve any issues that they have with their participation in the Baseball Factory World Series at Pirate City; however, we do not feel that their posting is a fair evaluation of Baseball Factory, the way we conduct business, the way we treat families or the execution of all benefits promised for the event.

    Sincerely,
    Rob Naddelman
    President
    Baseball Factory

  • To the President of Baseball Factory,
Your above rebuttal is misleading and contains outright lies. I have included a direct quote from your webpage below. Tell me, who wouldn't be misled into believing that they'd be playing against the "best" .........because that is EXACTLY what the website says? Also, who wouldn't think that there'd be scouts and college coaches there watching....because.....those are the EXACT words from the webpage?

My nephew was caught up in the same false advertising. You guys should be ashamed that you are taking money from hard-working people and filling their kids' heads with unrealistic hopes and dreams. Someone should get together and initiate a class-action lawsuit against this company.

QUOTE (from BaseballFactory.com website - in reference to the Pirate City tournament)

"The competition and coaching at this tournament will help prepare you for college baseball. You will get to play in Pirate City, spring training home to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Experience national tournament play against the best players from across the country. A great experience to showcase your skills in front of scouts and college coaches."
