I got a letter in the mail stating that I had won $150,000.00 in the Shoppers Sweepstakes Lottery. They enclosed a check for $3980.00 and that $1995.00 of that was to go towards paying the taxes on the winnings, and would be paid directly to the tax agent. The letter also stated not to use the check until I called the claim agent. I am laughing so hard right now because I know what they are trying to do. Taxes on winnings of any kind are the responsibility of the winner. They do not send you a check to pay your taxes, and the taxes on $150,000 is a lot more that $1995.00. They want you to give them your bank information so they can clean out your bank account. Also, the check and the letter came in a Costco Wholesale envelope, which has nothing to do with this scam. The REAL Oxford Financial Group is a very reputable financial advisory group, and is in no way affiliated with these scam artists. The funniest part of the letter is "Please do not attempt to use this check until you call. We urge you to keep your CLAIM NUMBER CONFIDENTIAL until your claim has been processed and your cash remitted to you as this is part of our security protocol to avoid double claiming or unscrupulous acts by non participants taking advantage of this program" How laughable is this? If you win money, you don't have to call the company before you cash the check, and if you don't want to deposit the winnings, you don't have to. So beware people. This is the second scam letter I have received in the past week from two different scammers. Talk about unscrupulous!!! Don't buy into this! Tear it up, shred it, or burn it, but DO NOT call these people or deposit the checks!
