I submitted my resume for a job advertised on Craigslist (this and most of the rest don't advertise what company it's for), and received this e-mail in response.

"Thank you for e mailing our HR branch about the available job opening. You seem more than certified for our available position. We have narrowed the many of resumes we have received down to 8 and you have been chosen to move on to the the next stage in the hiring process. Please see below for the occupation description.

Job necessities: Excellent written/oral communication skills in order to carry out administrative duties together with responding to phones and taking messages, the preparation of mailings, the arrangement and maintenance of stock amounts, simple copying, regular filing and e mailing, and typewriting correspondence. We will offer further specific particulars at the interview.

Hours: 9:30 am - 4:30 PM (Hours can be somewhat open if needed)
Compensation for this opening: 12.50 - 15.50 per hour (we will decide eventual earnings in the course of the interview reliant on experience)
Our hiring procedure is just about concluded. We only ask for you to finish a simple IQ(Intelligence Quotient) quiz to display to the H.R manager.

Please perform your IQ Test HERE.

After completion please respond back with the results and an unfilled time to setup a formal interview. My unfilled time is between 8 to 10:30 am and 2:30 to 4:30 PM

I anticipate your quick reply.

Thank You,
Heather Brown

I keep getting e-mails like these (it seems to be a lot more common now than it was just a few years ago, the last time I was looking for a job) and they all provide a link and a request for you to apply for a credit card (I hope people aren't being stupid enough to do those ones), an insurance quote, and now, an IQ test.

They often don't even provide the name of the employer or what the nature of the business is, or its location. That, to me, is the first red flag.

Predictably, the company website leads to nothing.

Total waste of my time, again, but at least it's getting easier to ID these e-mails from scammers.

  • I got this same e-mail yesterday in response to a job search on Craigslist.com. Makes me so mad because I sincerely need a job and don't have time for this. My 'red flag' was them asking for me to perform an IQ Quiz. Since when is that part of the interview? LOL I knew right away. Guess I passed the intellegence test. :)

  • Went through the same exact thing, but with Nicole Green. Reported it to FTC and craigslist, you guys should too if you haven't already. I know what it's like to really want a job, so I can actually see them fooling some really hopeful people...
