I signed up for a one year membership in February 2011. When I tried to cancel my membership in January 2012, the week before my one-year anniversary, I was told that there were an additional 45-days notice period. I tried to begin my 45-day notice period on that day in Jan 2012, and was told that since there are still 3 days in my contract (the official anniversary date is feb 3rd), I would be charged an early termination fee. I was not allowed to GIVE NOTICE of 45 days, until A FULL YEAR had already passed. I was advised to leave and instead come in to the place of business again, on the exact day of my anniversary and cancel then. I asked if they could just take my cancellation today as of the cancellation date (3 days later) and they said they would not.
So it seems that the minimum possible length of the contract is 1 year AND 45 days, or 13.5 months. This is deceptive sales, advertising it as a one-year contract. In fact, the manager told me that they have already charged me in advance for my 13th month, even before my 12th month had finished. Note that I realized 4 months before my contract was up that I would not be able to use the services any longer, however I figured I would just let the contract run out as it would cost me as much to cancel it as to just keep it open. However, I was not aware that I would be paying an extra month and a half beyond that.
I would also like to point out that this is the manager's interpretation of the contract. The contract does not explicitly state that you cannot begin your 45 day notice period 45 days before your one year is up, which is what one would assume.
