  • ShadowShopper.com is a legitimate mystery shopping support company. They offer a free membership and also a paid membership upgrade. Upgrading is not something that can happen by accident; however, if you participated in a trial, you would have had to change your account settings to prevent it from auto-renewing. This is where the problem typically comes in, because someone has failed to read this information. I utilized ShadowShopper as a shopper, both as a free and paid member, and I still use this service today as a Mystery Shopping Company Owner. I am a big proponent of never paying to mystery shop. You should never pay for a list of companies or access to the 'best jobs.' Company information and assignments are available via several free resources, and you should never pay for this information. What ShadowShopper charges for is their service, the service of being able to apply for jobs directly from their website, and the service of emailing jobs, according to your specifications and preferences, directly to you. This is a valuable service, because in the mystery shopping world, the best way to find jobs is to register with dozens or even 50 or more companies. It can be very time consuming to check all those company websites and job boards daily. It's also a competitive industry, where the first to request the job typically gets it, so ShadowShopper's service helps a great deal with that. Most shoppers tell me that they think the fee is more than worth it because of all the shops they can do in the time they typically spent just searching job boards. Most companies post their jobs here first, before anywhere else, and some companies only post to ShadowShopper. I do recommend this service, but the paid membership is not for everyone. It depends on how much time you intend to devote to mystery shopping and other factors. It's a personal choice, and regardless of whether or not you upgrade, you always have the free membership which gives you access to the free Certi-Shop certifications, tips and articles, and allows companies to contact you directly with job offers.
