I called my credit card company to activate my new card. 123Assist came on and said that the credit card company computers were down so they will activate the card. They claimed to be a service hired by the credit card company and for using the activation service a charge of $3.95 would be charged. This raised my suspicion but they went on to say that I would be issued a $100 gift card to Walmart (less the $3.95) to make of for my inconvenience. Reluctantly I gave out information to them, then they went on to say something about signing up for something else for $9.95 and I went ballistic, and bailed out of the phone call. But I had called THEM! So what happened? I called the credit card company right back and used the number from their website for customer service. She said indeed the card had been activated, but no charges were pending. The credit card company assured me that they will watch for charges. :-(
