I was searching for Goverment grants for my small business. When I googled it, Centre for Small Business Financing came up. It appeared to be a goverment website. I filled out my name and contact information to receive more information about grants. They contacted me later that day, gave me information in how to obtain the application forms for small business grants. They told me it was $275.00 for access to the forms. There is no access to forms, the only thing that I found was a phone # for the Business Bank of Canada. Who do not handle grants. Then I received a letter stating my payment Terms: 2 Monthly Payments, 1. $350.00 2. $345.00 off of my credit card. I contacted the company asking for my money back. They told me there is no refunds.

  • Hey Opa,
Sadly I did fall for this scam as well. The website does state that they are not government affiliated although it does look professional. However, I did get told their product they were offering for a price was not what I was promised. I was told that some of the applications for grants are not easily found elsewhere on the internet but they are all just links to free government links you could simply find on the government website. They state that there are services they offer which can help you with your comprehensive business plan, which is a total lie when I filled out the survey it stated that there was about 500 other grants I could receive (their service had far less and applications I could not apply for due to being out dated, some links did not work and most stated to just contact a company myself). Its just a cheap looking site that I could easily make. With free links you can easily find in a google search. Which to me is a lie of the product. I am going to call the company but I am assuming they will say there is no refund however I was never told by a representative that this was non refundable. I only learned later on from searching on the site it was non refundable. So I am going to suggest some things, I know it may not work. But I am going to try to speak to them about it. First you can contact you Visa/Mastercard. It is best if you can contact and dispute a charge 30 days from when you receive your bill. Under the Fair Credit Billing act, you can dispute a charge for charges for (goods and services you didn't accept or weren't delivered as agreed;) (charges that list the wrong date or amount; ) your next step is to write a letter. I copied a portion from a site for you. After you contacted them

*Step Two: Write a Letter of Complaint

If your first encounter with the merchant proves unsuccessful, do not hesitate to get down to writing the complaint - draft a brief and concise letter which outlines the particular dispute and mail the letter to the merchant. Use the ordinary “snail mail”, but not your email. The ordinary letter of complaint still has a tangible weight and undisputed gravity. Make sure to send a copy of this letter to top your credit card issuer, so as to assure them that you made an attempt to resolve the issue with the merchant. Then you should write another letter to your credit card company so that you officially inform it of the issue. Some of the credit card companies will send a form to fill in, sign, and return. Typically, the credit card company will require that you explain the situation and enclose copies of receipts. Your credit card issuer is obliged to respond to your claim within 30 days.

Under the the Fair Credit Billing Act, you should send a notice (not later than sixty days after you receive the bill) about the disputed charge. Do not forget to include a detailed explanation about the item you dispute, your account number, and the exact reasons for which you're withholding the payment. You have to also send a copy of the letter of complaint to the merchant, together with any other documents that support your claim.

Basically, I am going to advise them I am demanding my refund back or I will do that. As well other thing I am willing to try. Is you can contact the Better Business Bureau and make a complaint. Also I am going to try to contact Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Basically, want to see if it violates anything ripping off people making profit of free government site. If not maybe I should make a cheap website I can sell innocent people (joking of course)

But best of luck, I will let you know how it turns out

Also I read on other sites that conversations are recorded, however I was not advised gave consent which is a violation of the PIPEDA act

  • Also in order for a company to make profit off of selling free links/information. I am assuming you would need permission to do so

  • I fell for this as well. So far I have made only one payment and I have verbal confirmation from them that they will not take any further payments from me. Any insight into how to get a full refund?
