she advertised a pt cruiser 2005 for sale for $2873 with 39000k. said she was being deployed to afganistan by nov 14 and needed payment and to do this transaction before then and we would be using amazon payments as a 3rd party so it would be safe. amazon payments sent me an invoice that looked very real. i also had many many emails between amazon payments and this amanda tilden ( sgt) . so i western union the money to them and amazon payments would pay her after i had recieved the car and looked it over for 5 days and the transacation would be complete. i wired money to a bruce mcconnell with fees and all in the amount of $2873 on friday nov 11 and got an email back from amazon payments stating that they recieved payment and would hear details as to when car would be shipped, didn't hear any more from amanda or amazon payments after friday 11/14/11. i know now that the amazon payments emails were not really from amazon payments after contacting their 1800 #, they informed me that i had been scammed and that they never do western union because of it being cash. i filed a police report tuesday 11/15 after not hearing from amanda or "amazon payments" for 4 days

  • Just encountered the exact same situation on Cars.com. Seller outlined very similar circumstances...had just moved out of town, needed to sell the car quickly. What was odd to me from the beginning is that the price was less than 50% of the Blue Book value. So, the lesson here is that if something sounds too good to be true, then it most definitely is. I didn't go through with the transaction because I was preceding with the utmost caution. After several emails back and forth, I suggested to the seller that we use another third party vendor, escrow.com, to complete the transaction. He responded that he was not amenable to doing that. Then, before I responded to that, I found this site. People, this is a scam, and judging by the timing it appears to be relatively new. Be careful!

  • Also, if you find a listing where the phone number of the seller is actually a fax number, be suspicious. If you run a search of listings within a certain distance from your zip code and through discussions with the seller learn that the car is actually in another state, be even more suspicious. Just use common sense, and always, always be the one who brings your own trusted third party to the table to complete the transaction. Any legitimate seller will entertain that request if they want to sell the car that badly.

  • Same exact situation with a Sgt. Erica Alston selling a 2011 Acadia, too good to be true, so thankful I did research before proceeding. Here is the email sent to me from "her".
    Hello,

This 2011 GMC Acadia SLT runs and drives excellent. It is in immaculate condition, Automatic transmission, meticulously maintained and hasn't been involved in any accident. Everything works in the car: lights, gauges, radio, seats, windows, locks, etc... It has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions with a clear title free of encumbrances and liens. I bought it when I was serving in Fort Lewis, US Army base near Pierce County, Washington and now I'm deployed in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

I have dropped my price to $15,685 (negotiable) including delivery and handling to your address since this is an Urgent Sale! I need to sell it before December 22, when I will be deployed in Afghanistan with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home. The car will be delivered from WA by our Military Logistic Department in Fort Lewis, U.S. Army base.
I don't want to offend you, but the car is priced for a fast sale so if you intend to apply for a loan or financing please do not reply to this message.

The transaction will be managed by Amazon Payments for our own protection as a neutral third part. The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 5 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction. If the car is not in same condition as I said you will ship it back on my expense and Amazon Payments will send you a full refund. But I assure you won't be the case.
If you're interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your: full Name and Delivery address, to open a case with Amazon Payments. They will contact you to explain the entire procedure without any obligation to buy it or fees.

Thanks for your interest, hope to hear from you soon.
    Sgt. Erica Alston

  • This was also on cars.com and I this "Sgt. Erica Alston" for a vin number, which she sent me along with a full car fax report and told me that car fax would charge me for same report. I went ahead and did a car fax on the car, it did match this Acadia, but what wasn't on her report she sent me was that this car was a owned by a rental company and just sold and purchased to a private party, which just titled it and registered it. Pretty Good trick, this person must go around and rent a vehicle and take a bunch of pictures and get vin number off of them and alter the car fax report.

  • There you go...total scam going on here. Yeah, never give out your address or any other information to a stranger. And, you noticed that they required you to pay cash...it's because it isn't even a legitimate VIN for the car and it would be impacted by a loan. Crazy stuff. Why must people do something like this??
