A male with a foreign accent, possibly Indian, calling himself John Diamond phoned telling me that I've won $100,000 and a 2017 Mercedes Benz from a random drawing. I was not fooled for even one second but I wanted the full details of how he hoped to scam me so I led him on. Eventually, he informed me that needed to wire $2,500 from either Bank of America or Chase to pay taxes (which he said his company paid 99% of) to the IRS. That was enough and I asked him if he thought I was an idiot, then told him that IRS taxes are paid each year after Jan. 1 based on one's income from the preceding year so his reason made no sense. Then he said "listen to me" as if I was a bit slow and said that it was for taxes for the vehicle (which are not paid to the IRS). As most people know, all taxes and fees from a new vehicle are paid at the dealership by the buyer, something they would have had to have already done if they have the title. Any other fees are paid to the DMV when registering the vehicle. Eventually he hung up on me. I called the number that he had given to me, supposedly a number in California, and got an answering machine with a message from someone sounding very much like Mr. Diamond. I left a message saying that I would be notifying the FTC, FBI and Interpol about his scam and condemning him for trying to rip off people. People need to stop and think that if it's too good to be true, it probably is. No legitimate prize giver is going to ask for any money.
