My elderly father (91) responded to a random mailer which said he had won a share of the Australian lottery. He began to send money in the form of cheques in order to claim this share (he had never played the Australian Lottery. This is obviously a scam as these folks are not affiliated with the Australian lottery in any way whatsoever.
It is very sophisticated and draws the old people in bit by bit, until they are being sent 40 pieces of mail a day and are sending cheques to Australia every couple of days.
Thankfully, the family of my Dad were able to uncover this relatively quickly, cancel the latest cheques he had sent and protect him from any further scamming.
The people in charge of this should be brought to account and be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
Contact details we have for the scammers so far are: Tel: 61 8 8941 6700 Called Global Prize Centre or World wide awards. Website www.globalprizecentre.net
Steer well clear!
