Essa Township officials say a company’s decision to erect a sign for a private drug and al
ol addiction treatment centre in Utopia was premature.

Essa Mayor Terry Dowdall has been fielding calls from concerned residents in recent weeks after Addiction Canada placed a sign for a treatment centre at 8058 8th Line, the property previously home to the private school Renaissance Academy that closed in April.

Dowdall said residents first made him aware of the sign.

He said the company has not filed a planning application.

“They (the residents) were taken off guard,” he said. “This property was zoned for the school, so that’s what the neighbourhood expects.”

The Herald reached out to the company to learn more about the proposal. The company provided a short statement attributed to “management.”

“Addiction Canada has purchased a property in Essa and with our planning firm we have scheduled a pre-consultation meeting with the Township relative to a Zoning Bylaw Amendment,” reads the statement.

Essa CAO Greg Murphy said letters were sent to the company to make it aware that the property isn’t zoned for the facility.

He said the company’s lawyer acknowledged this and also agreed to sign a standstill agreement while it goes through the planning process.

Township manager of planning Colleen Healy confirmed a treatment facility does not fall under the permitted use, which is community commercial zone.

“We are concerned for the neighbours’ safety and compatibility amongst other things,” she wrote in an email. “We are working to have the tenant of lands stop all work towards opening the addictions centre at this time. They can apply and we will consider an application.”

Dowdall said the application process is the only way to determine whether the land use is suitable.

“You want to make sure it is safe, not only for the residents that are around but for the people that are going there for the help. So you would have to look at all the factors,” he said.

The company currently operates a treatment facility in Caledon, which was subject to a police search earlier this year after two unlicensed employees were charged for allegedly posing as doctors.

I recently went to an interview at an Alberta treatment centre owned by John Haines myself despite my better judgement. I had done some research about the company and Haines prior to going to the interview and was blown away by the unprofessional statements made by or on behalf of him. The interview was just as unprofessional and I was disgusted with the brief conversation with this man who seemed arrogant if not narcissistic.

The staff at the facility itself also seemed unprofessional. They weren’t quite sure what I was being interviewed for. A person would think given having 2 uncertified doctors working for him come out in the media he would want staff with credentials. However despite my telling him I didn’t feel I had the proper schooling and qualifications for what he wanted me to do do I have correspondence from Haines himself telling me I was qualified. I sure hope he is stopped soon he repulses me.

Provincial police have raided three addiction treatment centres in the region.

OPP carried out search warrants on Wednesday at Addiction Canada/Vita Novus Treatment Centres in Caledon, Burk’s Falls,Aurora and at a house in Kleinburg. Police also raided another facility in Alberta. Police say these raids are related to an investigation in which two men at the centre in Caledon were charged with fraud, after being accused of fraudulently identifying themselves as doctors.

The HR team of Canada’s largest drug and alcohol treatment organisation are being held responsible for the organisation’s use of unlicensed doctors.

Addiction Canada has commenced an internal review using a third party after accusations employees were passing themselves off as licensed doctors.

The review is targeting the company’s human resources department, which a spokesperson has squarely fingered with responsibility for the problem..

Company spokesman Brian Abela told the National Post he stood behind the “quality of staff at Addiction Canada” and they continued to “save lives”.

However, he was not as complimentary of HR, which he blamed for the problems despite the fact the review has not yet been carried out.

Abela said the HR department may not have properly screened some employees to ensure that they had the requisite licence to practise.

He said that someone who does not have a licence can still be extremely well-credentialed, implying HR may have missed the licence detail.

The National Post reports police served search warrants on Wednesday at several locations connected to Addiction Canada’s operations.

The action follows two employees being charged by Ontario Provincial Police last month with personation and fraud and false use of the title ‘doctor’.

The employees investigated allegedly identified themselves as doctors when they were not actually licensed to practice medicine in the province.

Addiction Canada’s web presence includes the claim that patients, who are drug and alcohol addicts, are cared for by fully licenced professionals.

Addiction Canada’s head office is located in Aurora, Ontario

looking–Muskoka BBB does not reply to queries—CMA (Canadian Medical Ass’n) has no listings for doctors on site-Dr. Richard Tucker and Dr. Manish Malik??????? There is NOT ONE reputable addiction center that has even HEARD of this place–going under their newest name Addictions Canada….. Why is this John Haines not in jail
