I was outside doing yardwork when I was approached by a young woman who said that she was selling magazines to accumulate points to go on a trip to Europe. She was extremely well spoken and explained that lifestyle success had saved her life. She grew up in Utah, had spent time in California doing "unspeakable" things, an had recently moved to Minnesota and was getting her life back together. I normally would have declined but I had been rude to her when she approached me so I felt it fair to hear her story which turned out to be very compelling. I ended up writing a check for two magazine subscriptions totaling $92. The literature she was carrying looked very official and after about a 20 minute conversation I was convinced she was legitimate because of her knowledge around recovery programs and sobriety. Several days later I had that nagging feeling still that I had been scammed… Which stemmed from a small comment she made when I was writing out the check in which she asked if I had any cash to put towards the subscription. Even then I only really questioned her personal motivation assuming she was just trying to scam the company and walk away with cash for herself.. Wasn't until I went online that I saw that lifestyle success itself is a scam. I'm claiming $31 in damages which is the cost to stop payment on the check, which 4 days later still has not been cashed .
