I purchased an update to my System Care Pro and at the end it took me to a page that said in order to activate your account you must call 855-491-2544. Even though I thought it was odd, I still called because I had just been victim of identity theft and have a fraud alert on my credit.
The technician had a heavy Indian accent so I don't know if they are even in the US. I just saw a Glendale address for them here.
What happened next is that he got a lot of questions about verifying my identity, which I thought was normal because of my fraud alert. He asked if he could connect to my computer in order to activate it. He did activate the product, but then started telling me that my computer needed to be reconfigured and started telling me about all that needs to be done to it. Then he gave me a $246 price to reconfigure the PC. After I told him I couldn't afford to pay that, he came down to $150! I still said NO. He wouldn't take no for an answer and kept asking me why I wouldn't buy their service. Finally, I hung up on him and since he was still connected to my PC, I rebooted. Well that was the end of my PC. My memory usage was now at 99% and nothing would load. Now the PC won't load at all.
I don't know what everyone else's experience has been if they paid or what not, but I didn't pay and they ruined my computer. I don't know what to do now, except take it to a repair shop and God knows how much it will cost me to get it back up again.
I would like to know if there is anyway that I can take legal action against this company? Please let me know if there is. I don't know how much these damages will cost me yet but since I have to put a dollar amount in the monetary damages, I will guess it will cost at least $200.
