I received a telephone call from a man named Steven Cook (of the "Legal Review Committee"), who claimed to be from the Law Offices of Leo James Mae & Associates. There is no such law firm in the state of New York nor in the state of Rhode Island. He left a very official sounding message with a case number for a pending complaint. Case numbers are only assigned by the court after a filing and no one makes a phone call to tell you that they are filing a case - they just do it and mail a copy of the filing to you. I checked with the state bar association in both states. It is against the law to impersonate an attorney and to not disclose that you are a debt collector attempting to collect a debt. I then do an online search for additional information on this company and discover other complaints. Every few months or so, these bogus calls and emails start and stop. It's beyond ridiculous at this point.
