A Chinese company in Xian offered a really lucrative business contract. The only condition: a visit at their company in China. Ok, we thought, what might happen? We checked their name and e-mail address and there was nothing about them online.

Their scam went this way: After each presenting our companies, agreeing on a contract and its signing, we were asked to buy some cigarettes and alcohol for some state officials to facilitate the bank transfer (which is very difficult from China indeed). We went to a serious store for that (so we felt relatively safe) but suddenly the sum for the goods we were to buy accumulated to over 3000 €. When we noticed that it was too late because they really rushed us into this and we thought that the amount was in their currency. What might have said no at the store but what might have happened then? They knew in which hotel we were staying because they picked us up there.

Altogether the costs at the shop and for our flights resulted in a more than 6000$ damage.
Don't ever go to visit a Chinese company without collecting information about them from your country's chamber of commerce.
