I advertised a car on carsales. He was the first to respond. He said he would pay the full price plus $500. He would transfer an extra amount for shipping to my paypal account. Then I had to forward the transfer fees to his agents. I can't believe I fell for it. I have since read that this is a tactic they use. I was holding off paying anything despite him being very persistent because I couldn't see anything in my paypal account. Then he set up a fake paypal email saying he was going to take legal action against me unless I paid the transfer fees. I am so annoyed with myself that I fell for it. I reported it to the bank and they say I should be able to get the money back but it will take 6-8 weeks. I have since read up on car scammers. This is what you do. Only deal in person, meet at a neutral location for a test drive - outside a police station. Take a photo of their drivers licence and licence plate and send it to a family member. Write down their licence number and go with them for a test drive. Get an old-fashioned bank check or cash from them. Don't pay any money to them if you are selling the car. "Seller beware" is just as relevant as "buyer beware".
