Last Tuesday, in a hurry to complete my on-line tax assessment, I was duped into completing a "copycat" form from a company taxreturngateway, operated by James Wyatt, Who4, Unit3, North Hylton House, North Hylton Road, Sunderland, SR5 3AD.
I was charged £500, which I supposed was for tax due, but which it turned out was for "services". Subsequently, on filling out the correct, official form, my tax due was in fact only £95. I am now in the process of trying to recover my money from Who4.
I feel this type of shabby fraud should be banned. Taxpayers are fooled by this ‘copycat’ website which appears at the top of any keyword searches related to tax returns on internet search engines such as Google. The website has been set up to look like the HM Revenue & Customs website, using the same colours and key words such as ‘gateway’.
It does this by providing an estimated tax bill followed immediately by a request for payment which it says you must now make – with a warning that if payment is not made, the user of the website may be liable to a penalty or prosecution by HM Revenue & Customs.
In many cases, the estimated tax bill is exactly the same figure as the payment that ‘you must now make’. This is done to trick people into thinking they are making a payment in lieu of tax when in fact the payment is a processing fee paid to Who4, operator of the website.
It is only when users of the website, including me, receive a confirmation email from taxreturngateway stating their return will be submitted within five days to HM Revenue & Customs that they realise their payment has gone to a third party.
Invariably, their actual tax bill turns out to be much lower than the estimated tax bill.
I firmly believe the website should now be shut down. It is deceiving taxpayers, many of whom, like me a pensioner, can ill afford to lose.
I am also concerned over what this company will do with my personal information it has captured through my use of this website.
