I was contacted by them to receive a gift card and offered a magazine subscription. However, I didn't start getting them until about 6 months later. I didn't remember about it until they called me saying they were unable to take the $50 out for payment. I was a few months pregnant at that time so I asked if i could cancel the subscriptions (I didn't think it would be a big deal as to it being the first month). THen they got all defensive saying that they had me on record agreeing to it and if I refused to pay it then they would send the $1000 to collections. So I told them I would keep the monthly payments. So far so good until the last few weeks they had been calling my phone endlessly while I was working. Then tonight at 9pm I get a phone call from a number in my area code. So I answer it and it was someone from Great American Readers! (this company is not in Nebraska where I live!!!) and it was a man who sounded like he was at a bar!! He was calling to say that my account status was set to renew at a locked in price I told him no it was not, no one asked me if i wanted it to renew and he proceeded to argue with me. I was very polite and kept saying no I would not like it to renew, I was not asked if I wanted it to. I was very persistent. Then he just got fed up and said fine you have 7 more payments your account if not set to renew and hung up on me. I knew this was a scam! I should have up dealt with a collections company.
