I just got a phone call - 559-328-2392. On the other end was a guy I could barely understand (not meant to be insensitive). He informed me he is calling from the Department of Legal Affairs with the US Treasury and that he's calling to inform me that there is a legal case that has been opened against me because I have not paid my federal taxes (not at all true). He said I had to call a number and speak to his supervisor for more information. Of course he gave me the same number that he's calling from - so I tried to clarify. "You are calling on behalf of the US Treasury?" "Yes ma'am". "The United States of America's Treasury, legal affairs department?" "Yes ma'am". I laughed. So then I said well you're telling me to call the same number that you're calling from, so just transfer me to your supervisor. "No ma'am I cannot do that. You call that number and he will answer. You have legal case against you". He just kept repeating those phrases and did not understand my further questions - he said I'd have to call his supervisor for that. It seems to me it's a scam to get people to call that # so they are put on the calling list. However, I worry they are taking advantage of elderly people.
