This morning I received a call (from 410-946-9098) from a man identifying himself as "Rose M[something] of MegaMillions Corp", calling to let me know I'd won a prize. I told him the notification of the awarding of such prizes come by mail, with a form to be signed, notarized, and returned to the prize-giver before the winning amount is paid out. He slid by that. I asked how I entered his contest, having never heard of his company. He said it was 'cause I paid my bills on time. What bills? Utility bills. I don't have to pay utility bills. You must be the wrong guy. *click* I called the number, the first getting an answering the machine, the second time the person himself. (NOTE: Either a bad connection or an electronic voice distorter.) I looked up the number and, without paying some fee, discovered the number was a landline phone in Severna Park, MD, apparently one of over a thousand associated with YMAX Communications. Since YMAX manufactures a computer peripheral used to make low-cost phone calls, I suspect the person who called me either hacked, or is using, one such number to make his scam calls. Remember: a phone notification of a prize won is worth the paper it's printed on.
