Two new tactics in this scam: 1) a claim that my local utility had put my name in a raffle, and 2) impersonation of a police officer in an attempt to convince me this is legitimate. I received a call from "Mr Peter Church" of Canadian Cash Awards saying I had been entered into a raffle by my utility for being such a good payer of bills and I had won a prize of a Range Rover and $15 million. To get the prize I had to register and pay a fee of $255.00 by Western Union immediately and to keep the receipt, and the "package" of the car and money would be delivered to my door within half an hour. I said I didn't believe him. He said that if I didn't get the "package" Western Union would reimburse me. When I still wasn't convinced he said his manager, "Mr Dean Shepherd," would call me back. Another call came from a "Mr Anderson" saying he was the manager. When I questioned him that Mr Church had said the manager was Mr Dean Shepherd he said "people call me Mr Anderson -- I have two names." I called the police who advised me it was a scam and said another police officer would call me back. The phone rang again and a "Mr Ashley" (whose voice sounded like "Mr Anderson") spoke to assure me that this wasn't a scam but legitimate. I said I had called the police and he said he was police and gave me, when I asked, a police badge number that turned out to be phony when I called the local police to verify. We then had yet another call from Mr Church and my husband answered and told him we knew it was a scam and not to call again. These people are very persistent and the phony "police" call sounded convincing. What is disturbing is that he knew my name, telephone number and address, although my husband and I are not listed by first names in the phone book.
