A friend of mine showed me this link on Pinterest and I thought it was legitimate because it was on Women's Health.com (which I thought was the magazine). What I didn't realize was none of the links on the page work, so it was an ad scam for this website. I, unfortunately, found this out too late and decided to sign up for the free trial. I paid $2.95 on my debit card and received an email and a text message saying "thank you for you order." The email gave me a receipt and even showed what the order would look like on my bank statement, so I still didn't think anything of it.
Later that day, I decided to look at the ad again. This is when I saw in fine print that the trial period is only 3 days and that I I would be charged $159.99 after those 3 days. I called the customer service line which said they were closed, so I emailed the address provided on their web page. My email came back "mail delivery error." I thought this was strange, but decided to call them the next day.
I called and the lady I spoke to said that I couldn't get a refund because the product had already been sent out; however, she didn't have a tracking number for me (I would have to call back for that). She said that she could offer me a 50% discount so that I could keep the product and then I wouldn't have to worry about the shipping and restocking fee (which is no where to be found on their web page!!). I told her "no that I wanted to cancel" and she said that my account would have to be charged and I would have to receive the product and return it before I could get a refund. I agreed because $79.99 is much better than $159.99. Then I received an email that wanted me to fill out a form to complete the 50% refund. I filled it out and then I got to the last question which was "you will not file a dispute with your bank/credit union." This is when I realized that this company was a little fishy.
Once I started searching, I realized that more people are having these issues, so I immediately called my credit union and tried to cancel/block the transaction. It's Columbus Day so they are closed. I'm hoping they can get back to me asap! The company will probably try to sue me because I said that I wouldn't file a dispute with my credit union, but I'm not giving away my money for nothing in return.

Update: 10/14/2013

I also wanted to add some pictures for proof and let everyone know that the company I dealt with called themselves "SecureBuyNetwork." I'm not sure if anyone else was dealing with the same company or not.

  • Hi Jenna, This same exact thing happened to me but my friend sent it in a tweet. I don't feel there is any option or way to get around it. from the womens health magazine to the free trial for 2.95 I have been screwed and also charged around 160 in my account. I would stop all contact with them because they could be getting into your email now as well if you clicked any links. Make sure you set up privacy settings on your icloud mail account so that it requires you to be sent a verification pin in a text if someone from a different computer tries accessing your account. I don't understand how people get a way with this. What a life, they are (Inappropriate Content Removed).

  • I also don't understand how the government cant put a stop to this. Seeing how many cases of this same scam are out there and posted by other people with the same story, you'd think they would want it to stop. but nope those people are probably racking in thousands a day by ruining other people financial stability for the month.

  • Yes, they seem like they are using different names and email domains in order to get away with their scam. The number I called was (888) 373-3911. I also received a couple other phone numbers as well that I have not tried, but non of them were the one you were given. I'm hoping my credit union can stop the payment before it is processed!

  • I will also be filing a police report. My fiancé is a police officer and said that people should start doing that. If you file a police report and have proof that this is a scam, then the bank/credit union should hopefully refund the money you have lost.
