My parents received a call exactly like this complaint: http://www.scambook.com/report/view/277202/Helptech247-Complaint-277202-for-$0.00
Except they didn't know it was a SCAM. Eventually the guy, Patrick Saunders, started to get rude with them. I called their 800 number and spoke with a "Manager" named Alex. Alex admitted they have a group who finds computers that need help and then they call the owners. When I explained to him that I was a Computer Security expert, and asked him how they determined the computer that needed help. He started quoting an obvious party line about "not forcing" users to do anything. It was at this point that I told him I knew it was them, and hung up. These guys are Scamming people who are computer illiterate into installing Software they don't need, and if they refuse, they lock the computer and refuse to release it.

  • After cloning the data on my parents drive, I connected their computer back to the internet through a laptop running Kali Linux to sniff the traffic. I booted the machine with no connection, and a "LogMeIn Rescue" session started automatically. However, the reconnection failed because the LogMeIn session had expired. I did however find the LogMeIn applet files on the copy of the data. (After closing the applet, it deleted all of the files.) The company Identified in the LogMeIn configuration was "PC Wizards" There is already a complaint here on scambook for "PC Wizards". Additionally, the "askpcwizards.com" domain is hosted on the same server as helptech247.com . There is a link in the LogMeIn configuration for reporting abuse of the LogMeIn service. (https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/Customer/ReportAbuse.aspx?code=2028601&source=applet )
There is also a phone number on the resulting page: 1-877-337-2102
Maybe LogMeIn can help Identify these guys?
